The fundamental part of Vallbona is the monastic community. It brings
the ancient stones to life, and , through its life of prayer, turns the
monastery into a converging point for contemplation and worship.
The monastic community is made up of Christian women who, having
heard the call of Jesus Christ, vow to follow him in a simple life of prayer
and work.
The essencial characteristics of the Cistercian order are life in
a group, silence, work, and simplicity. Community life is not merely
a question of being in the same house under the same roof. It is rather
a kind of life where everything belongs to everyone. Liturgical prayer,
work, meals, and recreation are all undertaken as a community.
The nuns of Vallbona follow the order of Saint Benedict, and their
life is based on the following:
1. Liturgical prayer, through
the singing of the Divine Office in the choir. This is the official worship
and public prayer of the Church. The nuns praise the Creator and intercede
on behalf of the needs of all humanity.

2. Contemplation or Lectio divina,
through spiritual reading and meditation. This is private prayer, personal
and intimate worship that links each nun with God. The strength of the
contemplative union with God depends on this prayer, and consequently,
the efficiency and social spreading of monastic life. This prayer is
fruit of the public worship that we mentioned above, and at the same time,
the best preparation for its celebration.
3. Work, along with prayer-ora et labora-completes the nuns’ schedule
within the monastic plan of the Divine Office. At present the nuns have
several activities:
